Bougainvilleas in Galveston, Texas.

January 2026

Looking for Bougainvilleas

I spent New Year's Eve on a cruise to the Western Carribean recently. Besides fun and relaxation with the fam, I was on the lookout for bougainvilleas. To my surprise I didn't really see as many I would have liked. There were just a few at the Holiday Inn Resort in Galveston, Texas. The cruise was exactly what I needed and I'm back from vacation thinking about what's next for my bougainvilleas in January. This month I'm pruning the larger bougainvilleas and beginning the process of propagation. Since some of my plants are maturing, this season my cuttings will be thicker in diameter than usual. I hope this makes for more successful propagation in 2026.

Bougainvilleas survived

The Bougainvilleas made it through the winter. I'm so happy, they even began to bloom in the greenhouse in early March. I didn't lose any this year, it turned out so much better than the year before. The ones I have in the ground are all beginning to grow as well. And to my surprise, I had left a bunch of long cut Bougainvillea stems in a glass jar with water and many of those began to grow leaves and bracts. I've transplanted them to soil and hope they survive the transplant. I'm looking forward to this spring.
